Direction is about whether the founder knows where the business is going, and whether the work each week is actually pointed there. It is one thing to have a vision in your head. It is another for that vision to be alive, shared with the team, broken down into real plans, and lined up with what you are actually doing this week. When Direction is in place, the founder knows what they are building, what the next stretch of road looks like, what this cycle is for, and what to say no to. When it is not, the work gets busy. But busy is not the same as pointed. This category holds seven outcomes, grouped into three layers.
The outcomes within it
Where we are going
Three outcomes set the destination. Vision Live means the picture of what the business is building is alive in the founder right now. Not a deck from two years ago. Not a borrowed mission statement. A real picture they can say out loud, in their own words, in under two minutes. Roadmap Live turns that picture into a path. The next 12 to 18 months mapped out clearly enough to plan against. Strategy Live turns the roadmap into this cycle's bets. The three to five things this quarter is for.
How we hold focus
Two outcomes keep the day-to-day pointed at the plan. Priorities Held means the founder knows what to say yes to and what to say no to right now. The list is short. It is being protected. Founder Working Ahead Of The Business means the founder is spending real time on the work only they can do. Thinking, deciding, looking at what is coming next. Not stuck in tasks the team could be doing.
Whether the founder fits the stage
Two outcomes check the founder themselves. Founder Running With Something Left means the founder has the time, energy, and mental space the business needs from them right now. They are not running on fumes. Founder Grown Into The Stage means the founder sees themselves as the person this stage of the business needs them to be.
What it looks like when unresisted
The founder can say where the business is going in plain words, without checking notes. The team can say it too, in their own words, without translating.
The week's work has a clear shape. Some things are this quarter. Some are next quarter. Some are not happening at all. The founder is mostly working at the level only they can work at.
The picture and the person fit. The founder is becoming who this stage of the business needs them to be.
Common patterns when it is not
The vision is in a deck nobody opens. The team is working hard, but on different versions of the plan. The week fills up with tasks that feel urgent and leave the real work untouched.
The founder is doing work two levels below where they should be. The business needs a different version of them. They have not caught up to that version yet.
